This book expands and adds characters to the Persian tale of 1001 nights. It is about a sultan killing a new wife every night until one woman, Sharahzad tells him a story that is so interesting but unfinished that he lets her live in order to hear the story the next evening. I picked it up as a read aloud for my kids as we study Persian history, but I find it a little too scary for my kids (as pretty much all Persian stories are filled with thieves, intrigue and cut throats) and I just read it m ...more

I am a big fan of folktale/fairy-tale retellings, as long as they are written well. I really enjoyed this one. The most thought-provoking topic it deals with is forgiveness -- would you forgive a parent who made you lame to protect you? Would you forgive a ruler, if he had a change of heart, who has a troubled and murderous past?

I love stories about the 1001 tales and this was such an enjoyable read. I love to read stories where there is a realization of who one is and part of that is understanding how others have and do "see" you. ...more
