2022 REVIEW: It was interesting to revisit this book post-pandemic. The early stages of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia seem eerily similar to 2020 America: there were plenty who thought the plague wasn't a big deal, insisting that they continue going about their lives, and there were people whose hospitality and humanity were replaced by fear. 3.5 stars. I liked this book, it was good. But I didn't love it. I didn't connect with it and feel a part of it. And I knew so little about the Yellow Fever epidemic. It was fascinating and heartbreaking. I picked up this book, because I've really enjoyed all the historical fiction by this author, and enjoyed this young girl's account of the Yellow Fever Plague of Philadelphia. It is an interesting revelation to people's characters to see how they behave when under extreme difficulty. ...more

A quick read about the yellow fever epidemic that hit Philadelphia in 1793. It is the story of a young named Matilda, and her family. It made me very thankful for modern medicine!

Historical fiction with a great combination of plot and history! I would recommend it to tweens, teens, and adults. This novel helped me understand more about life during the awful time of Philadelphia's 1793 yellow fever epidemic, but it is not a depressing book. ...more

I liked this book - it was a super quick and adolescent-y historical fiction novel. Must admit that it was mostly interesting to me only because we just moved from Philadelphia and it's about the yellow fever epidemic that hit Philly in 1793. ...more

It’s a classic but I expected a twist that never came. It was interesting to see what life was like at that time.

Loved that it so closely followed history, but a little slow for me.
