I have enjoyed a few Margaret Peterson Haddix books lately. I think I'll read more from her. This book begins with a description of Jessie living and working in the early 1800's. Her mom, a midwife, discovers that an epidemic of diphtheria is beginning in their village. In order to find the help they need, Jessie's Mom reveals that they are living in a historical preserve based in the 1800's where tourists watch them live, but outside of their village it is really 1996. Interesting book that reminds one immediately M. Night Shyamalan's movie, The Village. I am one of the few people who really liked the movie and enjoyed it more than this novel. Haddix had great premise, but the characters were flat and the ending came too quickly with too little wrap-up. I would have liked to have known what happened to all the villagers as well as the "evil scientists". Still a quick read that never drags.

This book was recommended by a friend at work who told me that it was her favorite book in the 7th grade. I have always wondered what people from the 1800's would think about our world now. In this book, it gives that perspective. It also touches on human research and just what is okay. I really liked this book and would recommend it to everyone junior high and up.

She had great ideas for the culture shock, and MPH's unexpected twist in the plot kept the mystery element strong. She made believable and diverse characters, and she stayed true to the 1840's feel. I also loved how everything came together nicely at the end-all at once but not seamlessly. Clever.

This story was very engaging. I loved Jesse's personality. Haddix did a great job showing her bravery and her fear. She was a very realistic character. I felt the way Jesse perceived the present day world was plausibe. The story was dangerous and suspenseful, yet appropriate for middle grade. The events were pretty believable. I really enjoyed this one.

Great premise! I haven't seen the movie that is similar, so nothing was spoiled for me. This book can lead to interesting discussions with your kids. We were on our way to go camping as we listened to this, and my kids were moaning a little about their lack of computer time. Just imagine no computer time at all, silly kids!
