Sue Monk Kidd wove a beautiful story. I immediately connected with both Handful and Sarah and I was equally drawn into to both of their stories. It kept my interest throughout and I looked forward to sitting down and reading it any chance I got. This is a story told from both the view of a slave and the view of a southern girl from a slave owning family who opposed slavery in a time where that was basically unheard of. Having loved Secret Life of Bees, and being warned to not read Mermaid Chair, I was unsure what to expect going into this one blindly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Monk's genius in writing and giving the reader a completely different perspective came through. I love the way she shows the evils and injustices of slavery through the eyes of a white child trying to make sense of her world.
