I read and reviewed the first three books in the Mortal Instruments series in 2009. You heard me right: 2009 .

In 2009, I used acronyms and words like "LOL" and "effing" in my reviews. In 2009, a majority of the people reading this review probably didn't have Goodreads accounts yet. In 2009, I started my first year of high school - now, I'm a sophomore in college. Throughout the years, this series has stuck with me, keeping me in love with its characters and crying for their fates. Throughout the years, this series has stuck with me, keeping me in love with its characters and crying for their fates. I hope this explains the first word that comes to mind when I think of the Mortal Instruments: loyalty.

Reading City of Heavenly Fire felt like coming home again. I finished it in 48 hours, taking breaks in between chapters to ~~force myself to sleep~~ savor Cassandra Clare's writing. This book speaks to the emotional core of the series and its characters; when I read it, I floated away from my constraining home life, from my friends' relationship drama, and really, away from everything. Like all great books do, it took me somewhere far away, where the only thing that mattered was what happened to the characters.

Clare's plot pacing and her attention to detail are both brilliant. This might be an unpopular opinion, but George R. R. Martin could learn a thing or two from her. In several interviews Clare has said that she outlines her books with tremendous care, and her effort shows - every detail she includes in her world-building, every action a character takes, and every scene that includes dialogue contributes to the overall conclusion of the story. Each chapter builds to the climax, and the most tremendous part is that this book went by so fast. 725 pages flew by. Like any great writer of fantasy would, Clare develops the conflicts between the downworlders, deepens the connections between the different family names, raises the stakes with demons and betrayals and faeries, and sets up the foundation for her next Shadowhunter series, The Dark Artifices.

All of that sounds splendid, but this series would be nothing without its characters. Over the span of six books, all of the characters remain consistent in their actions and their growth: Clary's boldness, Jace's wit, Alec's heart, Isabel's bravery, Simon's goofiness, and Magnus's fierceness all made me smile like a fool. Still, Clare adds even more depth to their relationships within themselves and with one another. After six books, she doesn't resort to the same character flaws from the first few installments, and when she does, she writes about them in ways that humanize and empower her protagonists. For example, Jace and Alec's parabatai bond made me tear up ~~throughout the entire darn book~~ a couple of times, as Clare explores their relationship as brothers and as lifelong partners in battle.

Loyalty. That word captures how I feel about this series. Loyalty can be brave, as I will fight for and defend the Mortal Instruments with every ounce of book nerd inside of me. Loyalty can be blind, too, because these books might not be great "literature," and they might not change your entire perspective on life. But in my experience with every installment from City of Bones to City of Heavenly Fire, loyalty is a beautiful thing, a bond that gives back just by existing. And what better bonds exist than those you form with books?

It's over. *Cries* and hugs book for a moment. A good ending, although it leaves threads for the new series coming from CC next year. Thoroughly enjoyed all six books as well as the three prequel books (Infernal Devices trilogy) Ah well, at least there is a new Diana Gabaldon book coming out in a few days and the final instalment of Deborah Harkness' All Souls trilogy out next month. *Tries to put on happy face* :P ...more

BRACE YOURSELVES: the FINAL installment of the Mortal Instruments Series has finally come! I read it in a couple of days and promptly had my heart shredded in two.
Now with that friendly introduction out of the way I can carry on with this review.

The darkness has come. You know- the one we've been warned about in nightmares and campfire stories. Sebastian is so close to have everything he wants: evil, power, and Clary. This book was the perfect way to end an amazing series. I give it a wholeheartedly 100%.

THANK YOU CASSANDRA CLARE! This book is gripping and exciting and everything you could ever want from an epic ending to a series. Bonus, we get closure with Tessa's story too.
I held my breath many times and thought it would all end badly. So many authors these days love to kill off main characters and discard any hope of them living happily ever after. Don't get me wrong plenty of people die in this book. Things do not go easy on anyone. There's heartache and sadness all around and it seems hop ...more

When i first picked up this book i begged it would live up to my expectations. ^ years in the waiting and it did this and so much more. In the end goodbyes were ruff but, i'm glad their story ended faithful to the plot and my hopes. Jace could not have said anything better than what he did (as always). I do love his little speeches. Though the book ws base doff only a few months Clary grew as if it had been a decade. Alec grew on me and Magnus made me laugh as always. Sizzy meant more to me than ...more

Just finished the last and final book of the Mortal Instruments books. It was awesome and amazing! I cried and laughed and shocked all at the same time! I will miss Clary, Jace, Alec, Isabelle, Simon and Magnus! It's to bad I have to stop in 5 stars and can't give 10 stars! I can't wait for "The Dark Artifacts" trilogy in the Fall of 2015! First off, thank you Cassandra Clare for your creativity. This book was impeccably written. There was so much going on left and right but was written so well I wasn't lost at all. I have to say I loved the previous books and this series but this book felt way to long and parts of it felt to drag. I love that the last book had so much detail but at times it just felt a little unnecessary! I normal feel I wish books were longer but this was not the case. I love the characters, the story, and how everything ended.
