A couple of years ago I was introduced to H. G. Wells through War of the Worlds. It's just an astounding novel - as speculative fiction, as social allegory, and as a nearly incomprehensible global existential dilemma to live through with the narrator. Since then I've learned more and come to appreciate the amazing polymath that Wells was, taking scientific abstractions and theories and synthesizing them into great literature.

With that said, The Time Machine - his first book - is not quite great
