This book is very much a painting of life in frontier midwest... the descriptions are gorgeous and somehow make you yearn for the open plains of Nebraska, even though life there in the late 1800s was clearly highly inhospitable. It's a gentle, loving story told by Jim, describing growing up there with his wonderful friend, Antonia, an immigrant who personified this wild, rugged country. There are two things to note about My Antonia: its wonderful descriptions of the landscape and life on the frontier; and its capturing of the emotions of the characters.
