I might not have read this one except that it was chosen by my book club. I read the whole thing over the weekend with a sense of dread. Things were bad for the characters and then they got worse. I've read others of Hannah's books, but this one, given the subject matter, didn't appeal to me. I found it to be too much. Too much darkness, too much violence, too much death, too many bad choices all in one book.

We decided to read this book for our book group for May 2018. I listened to it on audio which I loved the reader. This book kept my interest from beginning to the end. It's about a couple, Ernt & Cora who was married and Ernt (the father of Leni) was in the military and had PTSD. They got some property given to them from one of his military buddies in Alaska. I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this one earned it. Definitely the best of Kristin Hannah's books. The descriptions of life in Alaska are amazing, making the reader feel like they are there and living it. She does a great job with believable characters who have real struggles that aren't easily fixed.
