Shelves: library-book, book-club

I might not have read this one except that it was chosen by my book club. I read the whole thing over the weekend with a sense of dread. Things were bad for the characters and then they got worse. I've read others of Hannah's books, but this one, given the subject matter, didn't appeal to me. I found it to be too much. Too much darkness, too much violence, too much death, too many bad choices all in one book. ...more

I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this one earned it. Definitely the best of Kristin Hannah's books. The descriptions of life in Alaska are amazing, making the reader feel like they are there and living it. She does a great job with believable characters who have real struggles that aren't easily fixed. Her themes of responsibility, strength and living up to obligations were told in a realistic, hopeful way that most readers could relate to.
