I was so apprehensive about reading The Great Alone. A story set in the 70s with a storyline involving domestic violence? Ehhhh... I’m not so sure about this. Despite that, I put the book on hold at the library and then forgot about it.

I've been a fan of Kristin Hannah's novels but this one didn't live up to her bestsellers. I kept waiting for the story to engage but I found myself at times waiting for it to end. That being said, there were moving sections between Leni and her mother as well as with Matthew that made me keep reading. Without giving anything away, the second half heightened my interests but still left me feeling alone.

This story pulled me in from the beginning right up unti the end when I couldn't put it down, I just had to keep reading to see how it ends. What a great story.
