3.5 stars. obviously the movie was loosely based on this book. If they stuck to the actual plot lines the movie would have only been one part. This book is like an appetizer to the meal that is LOTR. so much was missing for it to be an entree in itself. I think I would have loved it more if I hadn't already read the Lotr trilogy. My expectations were set too high and this very good book suffered for it. I still recommend this to anyone interested in high fantasy or young adult fiction. My son en ...more

I actually didn’t enjoy this as much now as I did when I first read it as a kid. It was still a nice blast from the past so there’s that.
