The Giver of Stars written by JoJo Meyers is based on real-life women who clutched parcels of books as they negotiated the rough and mountainous terrain of Kentucky on horses. The Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program that delivered books to remote regions in the Appalachian Mountains between 1935 and 1943. The topics in the novel were many including class inequity, literacy, race, relationships between men and women and the role of women in society.

This story is about the packhorse librarians in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. There is some historical context but the main story focuses on women who are misfits in society coming to terms with their own plans for their lives. Everything at the end is miraculously tied up with a neat bow. Current timing played a lot into how I read this book. It felt very slow for the first half because the world was so surreal. This is like all the who's in whoville meets the Salem witch trials but in Kentucky and with a British woman involved. Honestly, I have to really really hate something to stop reading it... but I super wished this was a shorter book many many... many times. Would not read again.
