This is not my first rodeo with Sarah J. Maas. I think this is the 10th book I've read written by her, and it is one of the better ones. However, I also tend to enjoy the start of her series more than the endings. This particular story feels a lot like Sarah J. Mass's take on Anita Blake, and I don't mind it. (It's mostly the urban fantasy murder mystery angle that makes it feel like Anita Blake.)

I'm a fan of SJM, but I found this book tough to get into. Mainly it was difficult to keep track of the characters (I listen to the audio book).
SJM is good at world building, but it was difficult to keep this in mind when I first started to listen to the audio book. I found that I had to have a break, to get these things straight in my head. The caste system once explained did make sense.
The most powerful concept for me was the friendship between Bryce and Danika and Bryce's grief for Danika.

I listened to the audio, and it was a very long listen (I listen at 1.25-1.45 speed). The last 1/4 of the book was a nail biter! Through most the book I was thinking it was a 3 star, but the last 1/3-1/4, definitely bumped it to 4. It was very good and I will recommend it, but it didn’t blow my socks off.
