Be careful if you make a deal with the Devil, he might literally give you what you ask for! The first time I checked this book out in April it just did not appeal to me, but it had so many rave reviews that I put it on hold again. Once I made it two the second section I was hooked, I’ve read most of this book in a weekend. Is life worth living to see one more sunrise, one more magical wonder if you are utterly alone! “She can go without food... she can go without heat... but a life without art, without wonder, without beautiful things - she would go mad.”
So much to love about this book - until the last 100 or so pages, I thought that this would be a 5 star review. The central question of this Faustian novel - is the beauty and magic of the world sufficient without meaningful human connections and community enough to nourish an individual? Slow, dnf, felt that all characters had no morals and didn't really grow or change. Of course I didn't read to the end, so that might have happened, but I couldn't handle it and I got halfway through. ...more
