Be careful if you make a deal with the Devil, he might literally give you what you ask for! The first time I checked this book out in April it just did not appeal to me, but it had so many rave reviews that I put it on hold again. Once I made it two the second section I was hooked, I’ve read most of this book in a weekend. Is life worth living to see one more sunrise, one more magical wonder if you are utterly alone! “She can go without food... she can go without heat... but a life without art, without wonder, without beautiful things - she would go mad.”
So much to love about this book - until the last 100 or so pages, I thought that this would be a 5 star review. The central question of this Faustian novel - is the beauty and magic of the world sufficient without meaningful human connections and community enough to nourish an individual? I loved this book, however I had an issue with the plot so only four stars. Schwab is a beautiful writer and at times her prose will tear at your heart.

4.5 stars and so close to being bumped to a 5, but it got bogged down in the middle. Gorgeous writing, captivating story.

Surprisingly, could have used more character development but then, maybe that's the point: The details fade away to make space for our today. Not everything can be remembered. That said, I would have titled this one, "The Unforgettable Life of Addie LaRue." ...more
