What Members Thought

This is the story of Nora, a thirty-something woman, living in a dull English town. Nora finds herself in desperate straits, and has lost the will to live. She starts to regret choices she’s made in her life –not pursuing a graduate degree in Philosophy, quitting a rock band, dumping her fiancé before the wedding, and walking away from competitive swimming despite her potential to go to the Olympics, among others.

The beginning of the book is quite bleak and I wasn't sure 2020 me should continue reading, but the meat of the book was really fascinating and the ending more hopeful. It explores the multiverse concept through our protagonist, Nora Seed. She ends up in the titular Midnight Library and finds her childhood librarian Mrs. Elm there waiting to help Nora find the right book that will lead her to the life she is meant to live.

I was very excited to read The Midnight Library written by Matt Haig. As I began the novel, I realized that Nora is depressed and plans to end her life. She is wrecked by guilt and continually asks herself “what if?” What if she had not cancelled her wedding two days before the event? What would've happened if she'd stuck with the band her brother and she had started rather than bailing? What if she had stuck with competitive swimming? So many regrets.
