Three and a half stars.
I think I wanted to like this more than I actually did. The story is written as a series of letters--if beautiful prose is your thing, then this isn't your book. Charlie, an incredibly smart but awkward freshman in high school, is writing a series of letters to a friend. These are those letters. We know Charlie's world through what Charlie writes, and this offers us a unique perspective--they don't tell us exactly what's going on, only what Charlie thinks is going on.

Well-written, poignant and thought-provoking, but this book just wasn't quite for me. I was (definitely as a teenager) and probably still am a wallflower, so I expected to relate to the main character, gender differences aside. I was not expecting so much gloom and doom and not-quite-but-almost-unrelenting sadness. I'm very fortunate to not be one of those people who had a great deal of angst in their childhood and teenage years, so I can't really relate to those who had such traumatic experienc
