What Members Thought

Wow! Both dystopian and vintage all at once. If you were a child of the 80's and ever played a video game before and maybe were a bit geeky-rad, this is the best book you'll ever read. If you were none of these, don't bother cuz it will be very very weird. I wasn't much of a gamer but I definitely got all of the 80's pop culture references and was thoroughly riveted by this book.

I loved this book for the first 100 or so pages, then I got a little bit bored with the monotony of the hunt for the Easter egg and the game within the game. I felt like I needed to fast forward VH1's Decade of the 80's to get to the resolution. I really wanted to really fall in love with this book, but I just couldn't, even though I am a Child of the 80's and still have my collection of Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks on one of the many bookshelves. I enjoyed this book more than I expected I would at the outset. I am sure the many 80s referenced contributed to that opinion and so it may be a generational consideration as to who I would recommend this to. Overall, I liked the conclusion and message. A few times while reading I felt that the details were not necessary to reveal and it definitely felt like only a male author would feel the need to include that much information. This was such an immersive read! The fact that I finished it in 5 days right after Animal Crossing came out is a testament to how amazing it is. I mean it pulled me away from a game that I’ve been waiting to play for a year.
