Greatest Books Of All Time
still need to see the movie, although i've not heard good things.
I ended up enjoying The Goldfinch quite a bit, but probably not for the usual reasons. I was mostly in it for the depictions of space, place - most notably the aching vacuity of the way Donna Tartt describes Las Vegas. I also enjoyed the depictions of an aimless, pointless hedonistic adolescence with no adult supervision, which i found rather relatable.

I'm only giving it 3 stars because I found Donna Tartt ' s prose beautiful. This was one of those books you thought you'd like given the sheer amount of rave reviews and the recent Pulitzer win. The first few parts went well (all the way up to Theo leaving Vegas) and i particularly enjoyed the psychological depth that Tartt has imbued her characters, drug addictions, depressive episodes, the realistic portrayal of Ptsd, her philosophical foray into the grander themes of love, life and loss. but

I couldn't decide how to rate this one. It's a good story. But, here is yet another story where I find myself not caring one bit for the characters. In fact, I can think of exactly one out of the whole cast whom I don't find completely despicable. Maybe two.
