What Members Thought
I'm not going to lie...this book at times felt like a drudgery to get through. It was overly long and I am not a fan of long chapters, but it is full of beautifully written passages, and wonderful insights. I enjoyed the overall plot and I felt invested in Theo and his life. He doesn't make the best of choices all the time, but it felt very real and I empathized with him and everything he had been through. I loved Boris, Hobie, Pippa and Andy. Thank you to everyone who recommended The Goldfinch and continued to do so. I downloaded the book months ago, always planning to read it at some point. I kept seeing in pop up as a favorite so I decided yesterday that it was my next read. Although a long book, I finished it within two days as I had to know what happened. Thank you again or I would have missed out on a great read!
Most of the time, I enjoyed the long descriptions, but there were other times when I found my mind wandering and having to read the same passage several times before I finally realized it didn't really contain anything important. I also found myself getting bored at times when Boris wouldn't stop talking (especially at the end). Overall though, I enjoyed the book. Even though it took me almost 4 weeks to read it, I found myself reading it must faster than I thought I would.

This is a long book, broken into parts. The first sections were fabulous. The writing was beautiful and the story compelling. However, I felt like the last half dragged on a bit and left me feeling cheated. I wanted more...without as many words. If profanity is a deal breaker for you, this would be a book to skip. The alcohol and drug abuse was a little disturbing, especially during their childhood.(less)
