What Members Thought
I first read this book when I was thirteen. The reading of this book changed the way I viewed books. All of my adult life. I have told people it was one of the best books I have ever read. With that being said sadly i was a little disappointed. Maybe it is the movies, or the fact that i have read other more gripping novels in the same genre. Finally! I finished this monster of a book (to my eyes).
My only comment: Bilbo is really a happy-go-lucky hobbit.
I see the movie had to rearrange parts of the book to fit into the movie. While I don't really see the Radagast part in the book (he was mentioned, yes, but the movie had ALOT more about him).
The dwarves are mighty irritating (hah!) and for some reason I guessed how Smaug would have been defeated waaaayyy ahead before it happened. Classic fantasy must-happen scenes??

I read this with my eight year old. I have tried several times to read The Hobbit and have always failed to stay interested. But my son was so excited I was able to make it all the way through. We had fun reading of the adventure. But it isn't my type of genre. Good writing, a but cumbersome to read aloud at times. But it also reveals how simply most books are written now .

An entertaining read, though I found myself wondering how Peter Jackson was going to make this into three movies. I quite like Bilbo Baggins, an unlikely but very likeable hero (three words with like in a single sentence).
I read this many years ago and remember loving it. I love it all over again. If you haven't read it...do so. Highly recommended.
