I can understand that Moby Dick has been recognized as (arguably) the best fictional account we have of the whaling industry, and I commend Herman Melville on his exhaustive attention to detail throughout this novel. He holds absolutely nothing back when devoting large sections of the book to whale anatomy and taxonomy, whaling ships, whaling gear and tackle, the migratory habits of whales, how to butcher whales once they are caught, and how to barrel their oil.
