Don’t get me wrong, Lale and Gita’s story is incredible, and for that reason I am sad that I’ve rated this novel so poorly. Unfortunately, however, the way in which their story was told does not do it justice. The atrocities of the Holocaust were over-simplified, and on the whole I found the characters’ voices hard to believe. In saying that, this book is a fairly quick read and might be a good way to introduce teenagers to the Holocaust.

This story was based on interviews with the real tattooist who only revealed his identity near the end of his life for fear of being considered a Nazi collaborator. He meets the love of his life while there and tries to protect her so she will survive. There are harrowing events, as you would expect, but the depth of horror was lacking, more like reading an account in the newspaper.
