I always dislike rating WW2 stories based on true life as an 'average' book, because it's technically someone's life that I'm rating. I should be happy that I found this book 'slow and not action-packed'. This may sound morbid, but I read harrowing historical fiction for the sake of people shocked and heartbroken. Did this particular story do that? Not exactly.

What a book, I ended up in floods of tears but a smile on my face. What a heartbreaking story, all the more so as it is based on true events. I think it is very important books like these are written to keep people aware of how horrific this time was for so many people. A beautiful harrowing story of how love can survive and make people stronger through the worst of times. The author's notes are also very poignant and you can tell the book meant an awful lot to her and her family who were also v ...more
