I always dislike rating WW2 stories based on true life as an 'average' book, because it's technically someone's life that I'm rating. I should be happy that I found this book 'slow and not action-packed'. This may sound morbid, but I read harrowing historical fiction for the sake of people shocked and heartbroken. Did this particular story do that? Not exactly.

What a book, I ended up in floods of tears but a smile on my face. What a heartbreaking story, all the more so as it is based on true events. I think it is very important books like these are written to keep people aware of how horrific this time was for so many people. A beautiful harrowing story of how love can survive and make people stronger through the worst of times.
