This is book number two from Barbara Bretton’s Sugar Maple series. As with her first book of the series, Casting Spells, I found this book to be extremely well written. The plot is smooth and flows evenly and there is humor and conflict. To recap: Chloe Hobbs is part of a lineage that dates back to the founding of Sugar Maple, VT. Each generation is responsible for keeping the magic in this town a secret, which requires falling in love and then the eventual birth of a daughter. She is also a sorceress-in-training; and by in-training, I mean she hasn’t been able to channel her inner magic yet…or has she finally? After banishing Isadora to a place Chloe thought she wouldn’t be able to interfere with Sugar Maple anymore, Surprise!!! It seems that Luke has an ex-wife (that’s alive) and a daughter (who’s dead). Isadora continues to meddle with the town and is now using the spirit of a small child in order to procure the control over Sugar Maple and its citizens. Will Chloe be able to set Steffie’s spirit free without sacrificing herself, Luke, or Sugar Maple?
