I'm a big Charles Todd fan. Love the Ian Rutledge stories.

Now they branched out to the story of a nurse in WWI. She is on a ship that explodes, breaks her arm or something, and gets sent home to recuperate. Prior to the explosion, she had nursed a young man who asked her to take a message home to his brother. It seems as though there was something more than a nurse-patient relationship here. But we don't really know for a while.

Her father, known as Colonel Sahib for his service in India, where o

Book Club girl recommended this series for anyone who enjoyed the Mad for Maisie read along held a few months back. I was indeed "Mad for Maisie" and have since received the ARC for the latest book in this series A Bitter Truth but it's on the to be read pile as I have opted to read this series in sequence.

In this book we meet Bess Crawford who is serving as a nurse, like Maisie Dobbs during the Great War, WWI. Bess even has her own Simon like Maisie though Bess Crawford's Simon is not shell sho

I am always on the look out for new mystery series. But this first book in the Bess Crawford seeris completely blew me away. What an excellently written book. I could not put it down and I never felt dumbed-down. I have the second book and will be reading it and looking forward to any others that are written. Yea!!

This is the first book in a new series by one of my favorite authors, Charles Todd. I enjoyed meeting Beth, a nurse, home on leave after being wounded in the Great War. I found her to be intelligent and compassionate as she becomes embroiled in a mystery when she tries to deliver a message from a dying soldier.

Was nervous that Bess would sound like Ian Rutledge, but gleefully Charles Todd has created a completely new character with a very unique personality. I truly enjoyed Bess's narrative. Rational, intelligent with very little prejudices to distract from the plot, I feel like we would be great friends.

Carrying the final wishes of dead soldier, Bess returns to England duty bound to deliver a seemingly innocent message to the soldier's family. At first welcomed into the home, once delivered, Bess fi

Bess Crawford is a nurse during WWI who is left with unanswered questions that she needs to explore. Perfectly set mystery, describing the complexities of being a woman in this time, emerging feminist issues.

3.5 STARS

This book was an unexpected pleasure. I liked the character of Bess Crawford and her strength as a women within the constraints of believability in the time period. If you're a fan of WWI era novels, definitely give this one a try.

Note: The audio was slightly imperfect on sound levels, but not enough to inhibit enjoyment.
