Bray acknowledges in the back of the book that she got a writing prompt years ago. A plane full of beauty queens crash lands on a tropical island...GO. This isn't a book I'd normally read, but there is Hollywood hubbub about guys writing and directing an all female version of Lord of the Flies. Which is just. Ridiculous. On so many levels. In this parody of the objectification of women, advertising and lots more, 50 state teen beauty queens on their way to Miss Teen Queen contest crash on a deserted island that has some resemblances to the island on Lost.  Miss Texas who is totally into the pageant claims leadership demanding that the girls continue to practice their routines as well as work on surviving.  It is full of sarcasm, irony, and snarkyness, but then as they are on the island they become friends and discover out how stro ...more

Bray delivers a cute young adult novel about the contestants in a teen beauty pagent whose plane crashes on a deserted island. The survivors include a budding journalist who intends to make a statement about the anti-feminist nature of the contest, a transgender activist who was formerly the frontman of a boy band, and a beauty queenbot from Texas. I loved this book. And that is saying something considering Lost kinda ruined deserted islands for me. This one is like Lost + Miss Congeniality + The Spellman Files (Lutz).

I listened to the audio version with Libba Bray as reader and it was hysterical. She does such great voices for everyone - esp Tiara and Taylor Renee Crystal Hawkins, Miss Texas (you have to say it like that, trust me).
