To be honest, I wasn't a fan at first. Or second--I only picked it up again after abandoning it years ago. I guess recent history made me more disposed to hear its socialist sensibilities and class consciousness. Even then, I dad to really slog through it. But I'm glad I did. The last 10th really redeemed it.

A long winded novel told from two protagonists point of view, one a 54 year old concierge of a wealthy apartment building who pretends to be uneducated and as stupid as she thinks she should be so as not to get her hopes up for a better life and a young girl who sees the pretentiousness of her family and plays dumb so as not to challenge them with her intelligence. A Japanese tenant who can break through the social pretensions of the French residence is the person who sees the women as they are

"Read" is a bit misleading. I TRIED to read this one, but just couldn't get into it. I quit after 50 pages and just don't feel the need to give it another shot.
