I have read all of Khaled Hosseini's books, and I know this one disappointed some of his fans. In my opinion, And the Mountains Echoed is a reflection of Hosseini's maturity as an author.
Partially set in Afghanistan, this novel follows the lives of family members that are separated. I read this book at exactly the wrong time. Or maybe it was exactly the right time. My grandfather was moving rapidly from home to a hospital to a nursing home to a hospice. This book is all about injury and death and relationships, and it hit way too close to home for me.

Through connecting vignettes I got a light sense of Afghanistan's history, without a feeling of a political agenda.
Each backward glance of a person's life and their, often astounding, connection to the present section's narrator is a bittersweet reflection.
