What Members Thought
In its time it must have been perceived as a marvelous, thrilling book but for me as a modern reader, used to so much more explicit violence, it comes across as a bluff. Conrad’s descriptions of the jungle are fascinating yes, but in the end he doesn’t deliver. A lot of hearsay about the character Kurtz but hardly any actual events, no concrete descriptions of what he aimes for, of what he has done. Its all indirect and vague. Worthwhile for the description of the jungle boat trip only.
