A fun, breezy read that taught me about the lives of Dominican immigrants to America and the curse they lived under in the Dominican Republic during Trujillo's reign (as the author so eloquently puts it - 'the dictatingist dictator who ever dictated'). The book was a hit with my book club, although we all felt it would be useful if an English-language-only reader could read 'Oscar Wao' on an electronic reader with the capacity to tap on each phrase of Spanish slang to learn its meaning in Englis

This book just clicked for me. I listened in audio format and the narrator made the Spanglish slang sing. I liked the stream of consciousness and the character's weirdly funny, pathetic obsession with losing his virginity. Oscar did indeed live a wondrous life. This may not be a book for everybody, but it worked for me.

After reading 'This Is How You Lose Her', I decided to finally pick up the copy of 'Oscar Wao' that's been sitting on my bookshelf for near 2 years and has been through different cases of I-started-reading-and-wasn't able-to-finish. A lot of people seem to either really love or really hate this book; I haven't found an in-between just yet.
