Oof. This book hurt. I'm not sure how to even rate it, because although it's really well written, I can't say that I enjoyed reading it at all. I'm just too sensitive for literary fiction, or something.

Somewhere between three and four stars, whatever that means. The stylistic choices, for me, detracted from the narrative's impact. Roy is so unflinching in her assessment of grief, hypocrisy, and injustice that the often whimsical prose style feels forced, unnecessarily coy.

I just started reading this book with the the group "Banned Books Club" here on Goodreads. I'm only at the very beginning, but I am REALLY enjoying it so far. I love her writing style.
