4.5★ This is Lisa See doing what she does so well, and a reminder of why she is one of my favourite authors. As far as COVID projects go, this one is a standout. During that quiet time of lockdown and introspection, See has brought to life a fascinating figure from Chinese history, and made her shine. i really enjoyed this chinese historical fiction set in the 1400-1500’s. Themes of friendship, women supporting women, motherhood, and teamwork are woven throughout the novel. Delighted to read that Lady Tan really did exist.

Wonderful historical fiction based on notes from old diaries belonging to the protagonist. Based in fact, liberties are taken with some details, hence the historical fiction tag. Fascinating descriptions of medical care, particularly that of women. Role of women and hierarchy within the family made me glad to be living in today's times! ...more
