What Members Thought

I think a better title for this novel might have been,
"Mutnodjmet, The Chief Wife's Sister."
If your able to endure the entire story, you will become well acquainted with that phrase. You never get to really know Nefertiti, or what she is thinking, but you do get to witness one whiny temper tantrum after another. I lost count how many times Mutnodjmet had to break down and cry.

An enjoyable easy-to-listen-to historical fiction that unfolds through the eyes of Mutnodjmet about her half-sister Nefertiti in the first part of 1300 B.C. From an early age, Mutnodjmet knows that Nefertiti’s fate lies in marrying Akhenaten (later known as Amunhotep), the heir to Eqypt’s throne, and that her own destiny lies with being Nefertiti’s right-hand person, like it or not. Nefertiti is ambitious and calculating, while Mutnodjmet is conscience-driven, caring and longs for a quiet life,

I loved this book. Told from the perspective of Nefertiti’s younger half sister, this book transported me to ancient Egypt and didn’t let go. It took me awhile to read but that’s only because I kept wanting to stop and see what was real in the story and what wasn’t. I was not a history lover as a kid so I am using historical fiction as a way to learn more about certain periods of time. The more the book enraptures me, the more I stop and just have to know what really happened and what life was r

While we did not visit Amarna, our recent trip to Egypt still showed Nefertiti prominent throughout the historical artefacts of the country - and nothing of Mutnodjemet/Mutbenret, the younger sister of Nefertiti and protagonist of this novel. Reading Moran's work on Nefertiti and "Mutny" was interesting, particularly having seen some of the sites referenced in the books. Moran provides some excellent characterization and character development in this work, showing her characters flawed, and how

Definitely not in the league of Philippa Gregory's historical fiction about the English monarchy. An average read, with some good parts and a lot of skip-worthy sections.

If you are fascinated by Egypt and their kings, their rich heritage and how they ruled for centuries together, I would recommend Michelle Moran's books. With mesmerizing characters and strong narrative, she weaves facts and fiction with such brilliance.
