I really wasn't sure how I was going to get on with a 500 page novel, but as it turned out I was completely absorbed and didn't want to put it down. I just loved Alma. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that this wasn't a fairy tale; it doesn't shirk away from gritty reality; you really never do know what will happen and you never really know other people or why they do what they do. By far more enjoyable than Gilbert's forays into memoirs, "The Signature of All Things" recounts a tale where the heroine travels the world, and is competent at her skillset (in this case, botany). She neither requires men nor children as the eminent reward, but both pop into her life in somewhat unanticipated ways. "The Signature of All Things" is well worth a read for anyone looking for an unorthodox protagonist in historical fiction.
