I confess that I read this book against my better judgment because my book club picked it. I read Firefly Lane by this author and hated every poorly written page. This author is not a master of the English language, but she can weave a story, and with this one, I did get sucked in. I enjoyed the last half immensely, and for that I’m actually going with five stars.

I had pretty low expectations for this book. In 2015 I rolled my eyes and asked if we really needed yet another WWII book. In 2016 I changed my mind and realized that we apparently need a lot more. Anyway, I wasn't excited about this one, but the reviews were so overwhelmingly positive that I felt like I just had to give it a shot. The beginning did nothing to assuage my worries. Such a moving story. It never fails to get me that all these stories I read about WWII and it still feels like a constant discovery and I guess that's because of the impact on so many lives.
