This story is told by Amir, who at the start is a young boy coming of age in an Afghanistan falling apart, and primarily dealing with his friendship with Hassan, the "kite runner" of the title. Taking us from the 1970s to March of 2002, this riveted me from the first page. The style is elegant and clean, with an eye and ear for the details to bring an unfamiliar culture to life.

I love Hosseini's storytelling style. He brings the situation in Afghanistan to life in a personal way, giving western readers a glimpse into the beauty of the country and its culture during a time of piece.
Although following the story of Amir, the guilt-wracked protagonist who lives most of his life feeling that he failed his one defining moment, is painful at best, it was well worth reading. Not a book I'd label as "enjoyable," but one that I couldn't put down.
