ARC provided by Hachette in exchange for an honest review.

“Ships kept on disappearing. Since the start of man’s relationship with the sea, ships kept on disappearing. So assume the mermaids have never forgotten about us. We wrote them off as legends as soon as they were no longer knocking on our front door.”

This is such a hard review to write, but I suppose three star reviews usually are. I just feel really torn on this one! I loved so many aspects of this, but ultimately I feel like

I definitely enjoyed parts of this book but it has a long-winded aspect to it that kept my engagement wavering in and out while I read.

I'm no stranger to Mira Grant (the pen-name of the award-winning author Seanan McGuire) and for the most part, I enjoyed her novel Feed (though I can't say the same of the rest of the books in that series, unfortunately). LET MIRA GRANT WRITE HORROR MOVIES!!! This book reads like a horror movie 100% and it’s fun and spooky. There’s gore and death and it’s just slightly too adult to give to teens, unfortunately. There is a bit of adorable sapphic romance but it’s not the focus and should not have been anyways. Deaf characters are allowed to exist and do their jobs and there’s also a character on the autism spectrum who is allowed to exist and do her job as well. The Deaf characters do experience ableism unfortunat ...more

Uh.... I don't know about this one. I had moments where I was really enjoying it and then moments that were like... huh? The ending really started to get into silly territory with plot armor for certain characters. ...more
