"But I like you this way. I like you impure and scrappy and formidable.
I like the Evelyn Hugo who sees the world for what it is and then goes out there and wrestles what she wants out of it."

To start off: Evelyn is a true bisexual legend!
This book deserved every ounce of the hype I've seen for it. This honestly didn't feel like a made-up story with fictional characters. Evelyn felt so real! I felt so connected to her and the tumultuous life she lived. I loved the ups. I wish I could capture the happiness of Evelyn, Celia, Harry, and John when Connor was just a baby and save it. I cried at the downs (but no spoilers!)

I really loved the writing style!!!
But I don't really know what else to say other than that? It was interesting to know more about Evelyn Hugo and her seven husbands, and learn about all the stupid mistakes she did.
(Note to self: don't read other goodreads reviews until you're done with the book. that was my own stupid mistake)

I am not ashamed to say that this book made me cry. As in ugly, whimpering, and pretty-much-bawling-my-eyes-out-thank-god-no-one-was-home type of crying. This book has made me feel things I have never felt before.
Evelyn Hugo was ruthless. She knew what she wanted; knew what she needed to do in order to keep her and her career safe, as well as the people she so fiercely loved- she never backed down from a fight. She would do everything and did everything to prove that she was worth a care and s ...more

I knew in the first twenty pages that I am gonna miss reading this book, once it ends. I didn’t want it to end. I will say I loved the book and this was definitely “my type”.
The story alluringly travels from the heydays of Evelyn to a more composed and gracefully aging Evelyn. Ruthlessly prioritizing her career, image, and relationships. Going to any length to protect them. Never guilty of doing that. And whatever she did, good or bad, achieved or failed was all part of her on-the-job training. ...more

“When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is 'you're safe with me'- that's intimacy.”
I've been searching for a book that can affect me in a way that books used to, and I've finally found it after searching for so long. Evelyn Hugo in complex, complicated, adored, selfish, and imperfect. And I love her. ...more

"No one is just a victim or a victor. Everyone is somewhere in between. People who go around casting themselves as one or the other are not only kidding themselves, but they're also painfully unoriginal."
rating: solid 4/5 stars.
I really enjoyed reading this book. TJR has some phenomenal writing and storytelling. I liked the era this was set in, the world really came alive. And this certainly took a different take than I was expecting and I liked it. I also liked how morally grey Evelyn was as a ...more
