3 stars ｡･:*˚:✧｡ I picked this book out of my TBR jar and I have had this book for 5 plus years. I did enjoy this book to an extent it was just way longer than it really had to be. It read like a historical romance due to the time period which was nice and kind of unexpected. I was not fully connected to the characters by the end of the book, but it was interesting seeing Cath turn from an innocent girl to a queen seeking revenge. Gripping, Hopeful, Emotional... Heartless.

Heartless is a book that immediately captured my attention; with its magical world, baker protagonist, scrumptious filled chapters (the desserts mentioned made me so hungry, I actually took note of it, and vowed to search if most of it are doable), and detailed world narration. Being that the world is from Alice in Wonderland, Marissa Meyer did a splendid job in describing vividly how this world and setting feels and looks like. It was easy, for me, Gripping, Hopeful, Emotional... Heartless.

Heartless is a book that immediately captured my attention; with its magical world, baker protagonist, scrumptious filled chapters (the desserts mentioned made me so hungry, I actually took note of it, and vowed to search if most of it are doable), and detailed world narration. Being that the world is from Alice in Wonderland, Marissa Meyer did a splendid job in describing vividly how this world and setting feels and looks like. It was easy, for me, to envision the whole thing, and before I even knew it, I was flying off the pages, and enjoying the world that Marissa Meyer rebuilt.

The romance embedded in the book is noteworthy, because it makes the title, 'Heartless', make so much sense, plus, it makes sympathizing to the otherwise known antagonist character better; especially since I have yet to read the original Alice in Wonderland (blasphemy, I know!). I love how the romance in this book started, I loved the tea parties with entertainment, I loved the mystery, and I enjoyed and rooted the forbidden love affair.

How wrong was I to do that? How naive was I to hope?

Throughout the whole book, there were flickers of hope thrown around every now and then. The love and spark between Jest and Cath were not hard to ship. There were times wherein I thought, they're going to make it, they will have their happy ending... But, I was a fool! From the title itself, from the original work itself (which I have not read or watch), it was a story of heartbreak; and last few chapters were a proof of that. I'm so frustrated and torn because I honestly don't know if the choice Catherine did was wise or not. She saved her best friend but lost the one she needed and loved the most, thus, breaking her heart, and making her heartless... Is it really worth it? Nevertheless, the journey of Catherine AKA The Queen of Hearts was an adventure filled one, albeit it ended tragically.

Lastly, most quotes from the book exchanged the characters were worth noting, but one that seemed to capture my attention was from the first chapters, a dialogue between Margaret and Catherine;
"... an endeavor to capture attention could lead to lifelong arrogance and vanity. It is much wiser to let your inner beauty shine through a drab gown that to attempt to conceal it with physical accoutrements.">i.
I believe that this quote alone speaks so much about the reality of how the media has corrupted us on what beauty is and what it should encompass. ...more

This was kind of disappointing.. I didn't really like Catherine's character and how she blamed everybody else for things that happened instead of self-reflecting.. Jest deserves better :') Felt kind of iffy about their insta-love as well...
