I fully supported the first half of Pure as the Engineer relocated to Paris to demolish an old cemetery, met the locals, contemplated intellectualism. But the second half for me just lost the plot. I think there a metaphor in there somewhere? Perhaps about...the development of society? the advancement of the middle class? the smoothing over of the past and other general social badness? 3.5 rounded up. There's very little plot, but it's a pretty good read. I started to flag a bit towards the end, but the writing is excellent, hence the round up.
