As delighted as I am that Mr. Wilson's plays exist and are readily performed, this is not my favorite of his works. August Wilson successfully inserts the story of a black family into the thirties in America, where they are so rarely found. His characters are witty, with clear voices and entirely human motivations. The struggle here is predictable: two siblings have a family inheritance and one wants to sell while the other does not. Another beautiful play by August Wilson in his Century Cycle. The Piano Lesson takes place in 1936. I really can't do the play justice with a review, but I am very glad I read it.
