I really enjoy reading Edith Wharton novels. Similar to her others, she focuses on class differences as one of the themes in this book. However, unlike the others, instead of focusing on the upper echelons of society and who's in and who's out, she looks at the middle to low classes in this one. Interestingly, what happens to the characters in this story and how they act is so much more scandalous than anything that happened in The Age of Innocence. I believe this is my first time reading a "Barnes & Noble Classics" edition. Blasphemously, the original publication date is not listed anywhere in/on the book. (Various sources list the publication date as 1916 or 1917.)
I thought it was a good story, but I didn't like her writing style (too literal, perhaps?). I also found the book to be depressing through and through. (For some, this might not be a drawback, but as I am recovering from surgery, I am in need of a little cheer. :\ ) ...more
