I think this is my favorite Shakespeare play. I love Shylock. One of Shakespeare's talents, I feel, is his ability to create morally ambiguous characters, like Shylock, Iago, and Henry V. Because of Shakespeare's writing, I can understand the characters and relate to their motivations, yet at the same time I despise their actions.

Shylock's "When you prick us, do we not bleed?" monologue moves me every time I read it. And I am fascinated by the hypocrisy shown by Portia and the Christians at the ...more
