Though many of Penny's fans did not like this one much, I quite enjoyed it. Based on the truth of mass weapons of destruction, this one starts out with a little boy who cried wolf (or rather big gun) and end with a bang of sorts. ...more

While perhaps less personal and gut-wrenching than previous entries in the series, Penny's grounding of Laurent LePage's seemingly outlandish story in true-life events gives this one exactly the sort of resonance and punch I've come to expect from her. For a quiet village lost to time, Three Pines definitely has its share of long-buried secrets and harrowing history, but the depth of the recurring characters and themes lifts it out of "you've got to be kidding me" territory. This is probably my 4th Armand Gamache book - not reading them in order - but it was definitely my favorite so far. The mystery was interesting, but mostly I love the interactions between all the characters. And every twist in the story just kept my interest! Of course the setting is a character in itself. Everything worked for me in this book - and I just love Armand and now Jean-Guy. I just have to figure out which one to read next.

This was a great installment in the Gamache series, definitely darker with the murder of a child, but she keeps it from being too dark to handle. And I so love this village full of characters!

I won't be reading any more of her works. Only skimmed through the second half because it was a mystery to be solved, and even that solution was boring. ...more

My least favorite of the Louise Penny books so far. The plot was apparently taken from real life but seemed so farfetched.
