Life on a tiny island off the coast of Norway at the turn of the century was very hard. For the family at the centre of the book their lives were a constant battle for survival, which some of them lost. The island was their world, providing food and things they could sell and trade for supplies, across the water at the trading post. Loved this spare beauty of a book. So masterfully written, I felt compelled/pulled through it, not really understanding my own motivation for setting all else aside. The picture drawn of the islands and people of northern Norway in the early 20th century is heart-wrenching, beautiful, unforgettable. Picking up #2 immediately--I hope #3 will be translated soon!
