I was hooked right away. This book was easy reading; sometimes after a long day of work, you just need a fast-paced read with a story line that isn't plausible, but still keeps you interested.
Preston does a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged with unusual characters. Heck, he even made me LIKE the monster/person. Other than the fast-paced story-line there is enough of a detective/mystery story line to keep a reader motivated.

Ok, so I did go back to book one after reading one that was much later in the series. Pendergast remains an enigmatic figure with little character but an uncanny ability to nut out things that ordinary detectives just can't. It's ok, but isn't nearly as polished as the later one. Also, the ending seems to suggest that this particular tale has another part to it- so onto the second book I'll go- after a decent interval.
