This is the shape-shifter tale I always want to read and can never find. It's intensely original, both harsh and dream-like at the same time; there's romance (because there always seems to be, with shape-shifters), but it's very much not a romance in the classic genre sense. I thought this was going to be fantasy and it's definitely solidly horror. Not a genre I like. I guess the positive blurb quote on the cover from the horrifying author of the horrifying Girl With All The Gifts (the last horror book I accidentally read) should have clued me in, in hindsight.
This is a good book, though. Good enough that I'm giving it three stars even though I *hated* all of the violent/explicit/graphic/etc parts. ...more
