Hamish McBeth’s social awkwardness and professional competence make for a fun read, but the crime solving mystery elements are well worn. Hamlisch relies on illogical intuitive guesses that happen to be right. This is attributed to hi “Highlander’s sixth sense.” As a reader who likes to attempt to pull evidence together, I am frustrated by a mystery in which most of the obvious evidence is set aside. I always enjoy the books in the Hamish Macbeth series. In this one, though, I thought there were a couple of things that seemed a bit too pat - the episode of catching the drug/cigarette runners, for example. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the book and will definitely be catching up on this series.

This is a difficult review because none of the star ratings work for me here. I was suspicious of the series because of all the "anglophile" names - Beaton, Agatha and Macbeth. Not that there aren't lots of Agatha's and Mr Macbeth's in the world but it seemed a little contrived.
Anyhow the story line is adequate and there are some very interesting character developments but I can't help but feel that M.C Beaton doesn't really know how to write men. There are all these feminine roles and somehow t
