While I was very dubious at first, it didn't take long to get into the characters and the book. I love the dual story lines in past and present. Torn between three and four stars, I'm going with four because I rather enjoyed this book and I loved the narrator.

Kearsley's only just now getting to be popular in the US, although I was fortunate enough to snag Canadian copies of her work early on and have been a fan since. Her historical research is always scrupulous, but she manages to present it in such a way that it feels well-integrated and pertinent to her fictional story. But the highlight here is that while there's a romantic element to the plot, Kearsley does an exceptional job with Anna's familial relationships, particularly her father figures -

I don't read much historical fiction, time travel or books about or set in Russia, I'm not sure what made me try this one, but I did. It was well worth the effort and since my knowledge about Russia and its history is practically nonexistent, I increased my knowledge by 100%. The author handled the time travel bit especially well. I usually have trouble jumping from one time frame to another but she made it easy.
